What We Do

Designing and engaging public participation in governing digital transformation.

At Digital Public, we help governments, non-profits, and digital transformation projects design contextual, legal, digital governance.

Advocacy

Digital governance is a series of existing systems and emergent systems. The institutions we use to build social systems have transferred from communities and legislatures to procurement and platforms. Digital Public’s advocacy focuses on that shifting surface for advocacy, and focuses on traditional and non-traditional approaches to impact-focused engagement—from expert testimony in strategic impact litigation to international standards-setting processes to facilitating disparate groups into providing coherent policy recommendations. Digital Public’s advocacy builds and conveys a range of traditional and emerging advocacy skills to help groups articulate and achieve equity amidst digital transformation.

Advisory

Digital governance is a practice, as well as a field. Digital transformation is playing a role in just about anything, and as relationships become increasingly modeled in data and its exchange - we see the rapidly growing need for data governance services. Digital Public helps build digital governance in practice, and as a field—refining professional standards, creating accessible tools, and advancing practice. We bring legal, engagement, and governance expertise to bear on the large and complex digital governance design challenges that organizations, institutions, and communities of all types are facing. Our work on data trusts, data governance strategies, and process frameworks create short-term results and long-term adaptive capacity.

Research

Digital governance is an emerging field, in a very developed and poorly understood area of practice. That’s reflected by a growing, intersectional academic field, led by a wide range of centres—but lacking a cohesive taxonomy or topography. Digital Public’s research and advocacy recognizes that the best way to improve a public interest field, is by creating strong connections between advocates, expertise, and the resources to act. Digital Public coordinates and conducts research in our areas of practice, in order to ensure that our work adapts to emerging best practice and that research focuses on areas of practical impact. We also believe in building a pipeline of ethical, capable leaders focused on proactively improving the field.
